Trump calls discussions with Putin ‘productive’, urges him to spare Ukrainian troops

U.S. President Donald Trump said Friday that the war between Russia and Ukraine could end after Washington had a “productive” discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin on Thursday.

He added that his request for Putin to save the life of the Ukrainian army was clearly referring to the Kursk region surrounding Ukrainian troops, which is their only foothold on Russian territory.

“Yesterday we had a very good and productive discussion with Russian President Vladimir Putin, and there is a good chance that this horrible, bloody war will finally end,” Trump said in the “Truth Social Post.”

White House spokesman Karoline Leavitt later told reporters that Trump did not talk to Putin on Thursday, but U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff.

Witkoff held a long meeting with Putin in Moscow on Thursday night, according to a source.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin sent a “signal” to Trump through Witkoff. He said Russia and the United States will brief Trump on the timing of the phone call between the presidents in Witkov.

The U.S. president has said he hopes Moscow and Kiev agree to a quick ceasefire to stop and fight in the conflict he warned, which could potentially be trapped in the Third World War II and have given many lives to both sides.
