North Macedonia nightclub fire claims more than 50 lives

At least 51 people were killed and more than 100 injured in a devastating fire filled with nightclubs in the northern Kokani.

On Sunday, at a DNA band concert, the fire broke out at 3 a.m. (02:00 GMT) when fireworks technology set off within the Kokani venue, about 100 kilometers (62 miles) east of the capital Skopje.

“The sparks caused the sparks…the fire spread to the disco hall,” Interior Minister Toskovski said on Sunday.

Video of the event verified by Reuters shows a band playing on stage, flanked by two bands that emit white sparks into the air. Sparks put the ceiling above the band and as the video was edited, they seemed to walk away.

Social media video shows the building completely engulfed by flames and the smoke rises into the night sky.

Television footage of local broadcasters showed firefighters at the club’s burning and smoking entrance called “Pulse”.

North Macedonia’s MRT Public Broadcasting Corporation reported 27 people were hospitalized in Skopje City Hospital, with severe burns, and another 23 were treated in clinical centers. It said there were minors among them.

“It’s been a difficult and very sad day for Macedonia! Losing so much of life is irreparable, and the pain of family, family and friends is immeasurable,” Prime Minister Hristijan Mickoski said in a Facebook post.

“I call on all competent authorities – health services, relevant authorities – to take urgent measures to help injured and provide support to families of families.”

The Ministry of Home Affairs said prosecutors from the Emergency Services Department and Kokani Basic Attorney’s Office were on the scene.

“The number of victims and injuries is still being determined. All the resources and capacities of the prosecutor will be mobilized to support Kocani’s prosecution in its emergency response,” the prosecutor’s office said in a statement.
