UN says Israeli attacks killed only women, children in Gaza

The UN said Palestinian women and children were the only deaths in at least 32 Israeli air strikes on Gaza since mid-March, as it warned that Israel’s military offensive threatened the “persistent existence” of the Palestinians.

Ravina Sharmdasani, spokesman for the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, said Friday that the office recorded 224 Israeli strikes on residential buildings and tents between March 18 and April 9.

“In about 36 strikes, the UN Human Rights Office has received confirmed information, and so far only women and children have been recorded in deaths.”

According to the Palestinian Ministry of Health, the discovery comes as Israeli attacks on Gaza killed more than 1,500 Palestinians since the ceasefire broke in March.

Israel has also created a blockade of coastal Palestinian enclaves, leading the United Nations and rights groups to warn of the rapid disappearance of food, water, medicine and other critical supplies.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres told reporters in New York earlier this week.

“With the drought of aid, the horror gates reopened. Gaza is a killing field – civilians are in endless environments of death.”

Palestinian rights organization Al-Haq said the findings of the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights show that 36 Israeli attacks on Gaza killing only women and children further confirm the previously identified patterns.

Al-Haq said: “Israel aims to target women and children in Gaza.

“In any other modern conflict, there has not been such an extinct effort of women, boys, girls, and even babies,” Al-Haq said in an article on social media.

“They were forced to endure a full lockdown on humanitarian aid in terms of targets being heavily weaponed – now for the second straight month,” the group said.
