UN rights body adopts resolution on achieving accountability, justice in Palestine
The UN Human Rights Commission on Wednesday adopted a resolution proposed by Pakistan on behalf of the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) calling for Israeli and judicial responsibility for the occupied Palestinian territories in the midst of an ongoing conflict in Gaza.
Despite international efforts to lead to a ceasefire, the Gaza War, which began in October 2023, continues. According to the latest data, Palestinian deaths exceed 50,000, with women and children accounting for a lot of casualties.
Thousands are still missing under the ruins of buildings destroyed in Israeli air strikes. At the same time, there are reports of harassment, arbitrary detention, and even sexual assault on Palestinians in the West Bank and East Jerusalem.
“In the past 18 months, the Palestinian people have suffered terrible fear,” said Pakistan’s ambassador in Geneva, Ambassador Bilal Ahmed, in Geneva. “Whether in the desolate Gaza Strip or the West Bank, including East Jerusalem, the Council has proven a series of crimes demanding justice.”
Ahmed said the resolution reflects an advisory opinion from the International Court of Justice starting in July 2024, which declares the ongoing presence of Israel in the Palestinian territory.
It also incorporates findings from the United Nations Independent International Commission of Inquiry on the widespread and systematic use of sexual violence against Palestinians, especially women and girls.
The resolution stresses the need to prevent and punish “Genocide of Gaza” in accordance with ICJ interim measures in January 2024.
It further calls for the establishment of an independent mechanism to assist in the investigation and prosecution of persons who commit the most serious crimes in international law.
“We have long known that impunity for human rights violations will lead to more and more serious violations,” Ahmed said. “The adoption of this resolution will show the council’s firm determination to end impunity for consecutive violators. It will be the light at the end of an unimaginable dark tunnel for the Palestinian people.”
Pakistan’s permanent mission to the United Nations in Geneva later confirmed that the resolution was adopted by the vast majority.
