Kiev: Both Ukraine and Russia filed complaints to Washington, accusing each other of attacking energy facilities, violating the so-called understanding reached in Saudi Arabia, as Kief urged the United States to strengthen sanctions on Moscow.
Both parties accused the other of violating a hypothetical deal to stop firing at the energy site, although no formal agreement has been reached and the commitments of both parties are unclear.
After a separate meeting with U.S. officials, the White House said both Ukraine and Russia “agree to put in place measures to implement a deal that “bans strikes on energy facilities in Russia and Ukraine.”
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his defense secretary Rustem Umerov kept in touch with U.S. officials.
“We have conveyed all the necessary information about Russian violations in the energy sector,” Zelensky said in his daily evening speech.
He earlier called on Washington to strengthen sanctions on Russia as a response.
“I believe we have reached the impact of increasing sanctions because I believe the Russians have violated everything they promised to the United States. At least what the United States told us publicly,” Zelensky said at a press conference in Kiev.
“And we really want President (Donald) Trump to have all these appropriate tools to increase sanctions pressure on Russia.”
He said Ukraine is still “preparing for” an unconditional ceasefire with Russia.
In Moscow, Russian President Vladimir Putin discussed allegations of “illegal violation” in Ukraine earlier in a private meeting of senior security officials on Tuesday.
Moscow also said it had handed over its complaint to Washington.
“We passed a list”
After the meeting, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said: “We handed the list of violations to U.S. National Security Adviser Mike Waltz.”
He added: “I have handed this list over to U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio.”
Russia’s defense ministry earlier accused Kief of strikes on Russian energy sites in the Russian region and part of Moscow-controlled Zaporizhzhia area.
The allegations come after Ukrainian Foreign Minister Andriy Sybiga said thousands of Russian strikes in the southern Helsen region have no power.
Local authorities later said that the power had been restored.
Since the invasion in February 2022, Russia has launched systematic air attacks on Ukrainian power plants and grids.
Putin rejected an unconditional and complete ceasefire proposal by the United States-Ukraine last month.
Sybiga also said Kiev and Washington are holding new talks on the mineral agreement that will give the United States access to Ukrainian natural resources in exchange for more support.
The two countries had planned to sign a deal in February to extract Ukraine’s strategic minerals until a spectacular television White House conflict between Trump and Zelensky derailed the deal.
Trump warned Zelensky on Sunday that he would have a “big problem” if Kiev rejected the latest U.S. proposal, details of which were not published by any aspect.
