According to the U.S. Geological Survey (USGS), the estimated amplitude of intense earthquakes on the Richter scale is 7.2.
The tremor was tremored about 175 kilometers southeast of Kimbe in western New England at around 6:04 am local time on Saturday morning.
The earthquake occurred at a depth of 49 kilometers below the surface, making it moderately shallow. Experts say the vibration may be widely felt in nearby areas and may lead to mild damage. Kimbe residents (nearly 19,000 people) may have experienced a noticeable tremor.
The U.S. Tsunami Warning Center issued a tsunami warning. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
Different assessments were made for the intensity of the earthquake. The European-Medium-Seismology Center (EMSC) reported a magnitude of 7.1, while France’s National Earthquake Network recorded it as 6.6. Similar events have also been reported by German and American scientific institutions, with slightly different magnitudes.
This difference is not uncommon in the early hours of the earthquake, as seismologists continue to analyze the data.
No immediate reports of injuries or major damage have been confirmed, but updates are expected as more details progress.
The situation is still developing and authorities are urging people in coastal areas to remain vigilant and follow official guidance.
