Oxfam raises alarm over increasing risk of famine in Gaza

Oxfam charity calls on Israel to resume a ceasefire agreement and cancel its siege on Gaza, saying the general lockdown is increasing the risk of famine for desperate civilians in coastal enclaves.

It also said that Israel’s re-attack on the territory, including in important areas such as food security and livelihoods, as well as important maintenance work on damage to water infrastructure, seriously hindered its operations in Gaza.

“For the past 535 days, Israel has been systematically engaging in life-saving assistance, imposing collective punishment on Gaza’s population,” said Oxfam’s policy director in Palestine Bashra Bushra Khalidi.

She added: “Denied food, water, fuel and electricity are war crimes and crimes against humanity. Many in the international community have achieved this through silence, inaction and complicity.”

European Equality Commissioner Hadja Lahbib said she was shocked by reports of more Israeli attacks on health workers, ambulances and hospitals in Gaza.

“These actions undermine the basic and heroic efforts to help workers save lives in hostilities. Humanitarian assistance efforts must continue to help people desperately need people. All must respect international humanitarian law.”

Global rights group Amnesty International has responded strongly to Israel’s recent killing of two Palestinian journalists in Gaza.

“Those who make relentless efforts for the Palestinian voice are part of how Israel maintains its segregation system and are inappropriate for its genocide against Palestinians in Gaza,” the group said on X.

Israeli forces have killed at least 11 people in Gaza since the early hours of this morning, including a mother and her six-month-old baby in northern Jabbaria.

Israeli troops also continued to bomb Syria, killing at least six people in Deraa and were condemned by Qatar and Saudi Arabia.
