Geneva: Last year was the deadliest person on immigration records, with nearly 9,000 people dead on dangerous routes, with one in ten being violently killed in shootings and one in ten being violently killed in shootings.

In 2024, at least 8,938 people died on immigration routes, with the Asian route being the deadliest, followed by Mediterranean transit and Africa, including the Sahara Desert.

“The increase in deaths in many parts of the world shows why we need an international, overall response to prevent tragic loss of life,” Ugochi Daniels, deputy director of the International Organization for Migration (IOM), said in a statement.

IOM said at least 10% of immigration deaths were violent – a category that includes shootings, stabbings and beatings, and also covers state-authorized killings of immigrants.

The countries with the highest number of such violent deaths occurred in Iran, Myanmar, Bangladesh and Mexico, an IOM spokesman said.

The spokesman added that data on violent deaths were not captured in the sea of the Shanghai Army being forced to push backwards after drowning.

IOM data can be traced back to 2014. The number of immigrant deaths recorded each year has increased since 2021, and thousands of people believe that more are not recorded each year due to the lack of official records.

The Geneva-based agency is one of several groups that help displaced people get hit by a massive U.S. aid cuts, forcing them to expand backwards or shutter programs to the point where it will have a significant impact on immigration.
