Dozens in hospital in Malaysia after towering blaze on Petronas gas pipeline

A huge fire broke out on a gas pipeline run by state energy giant oil company on Tuesday, and dozens of people were treated in hospitals, pouring burning debris and broken windows from the sky.

Authorities said the fire in Kuchang Town, a suburb of the capital Kuala Lumpur, was put out in mid-afternoon. They said at least 305 people were affected, including those homeless people who were damaged in 190 homes.

There were no deaths reported, the Health Minister said those sent to the hospital were in a stable state.

Witnesses at the evacuation center described the chaotic scene that began with the explosion.

Raja Hilmy bin Raja Idris, the 59-year-old house is 1 km (0.6 miles), and the fire is really fierce once you see the debris that are still on fire.

“The red light moves around”

Evian Wee, 50, said she initially believed a tornado or earthquake had occurred.

“I saw a red light walking around…I kept hearing the falling things – glass, stone, all crashed. All the windows were broken.”

“It started with the explosion and then the windows started to shivering violently. That’s when we realized it was the time when the explosion caused the fire.”

Petronas earlier said it had isolated the pipeline and worked closely with all involved parties to ensure the safety of the surrounding communities, the environment and the safety of gas supplies.

Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim said the state government and oil companies will assume full responsibility for restoring the region, adding that the process could take a year.
