Beijing: China’s second leader called for a “dialogue” with Washington at a meeting in Beijing on Sunday, attended by prominent American business directors and President Donald Trump’s key congressional allies.
Relations between the world’s two largest economies have fallen in recent weeks as Trump’s trade prospects against China threaten a package of tariffs.
Premier Li Qiang’s comments were made in a meeting with Republican Senator Trump supporter Steve Daines of Montana.
His visit was seen as ease of interest in tensions, holding a summit between Trump and Chinese President Xi Jinping.
“Our sides need to choose dialogue rather than confrontation, not zero-sum competition,” Lee told Daines.
It also attended the CEOs of major companies including FedEx, Pfizer and Qualcomm.
Lee said he hopes Washington “together with China to promote stable, sustainable and sustainable development of relations.”
Earlier on Sunday, Lee told the China Development Forum that despite “decentralization,” Beijing will pursue economic globalization, a thinner trade turmoil caused by Trump.
“Coarse water”
Since the pandemic, Chinese leaders have been trying to direct a shaky economy to a more stable path, especially by promoting consumption.
As Trump launches tariff wars with major U.S. trading partners including China, Canada and Mexico, they are seeking to position the country as a defender of the multilateral economic system.
“China will firmly stand on the right side of history, on the right side of justice, and act in the rough waters of the times,” Lee said at an annual forum attended by business leaders including Apple CEO Tim Cook.
Li said Beijing will “according to the right direction of economic globalization, practice true multilateralism, and strive to be a force of stability and certainty.”
Lee clearly mentioned the new trade war triggered by Trump, saying that “global economic division is intensifying” and “instability and uncertainty are rising.”
“Frank dialogue”
Talks are expected to discuss the flow of deadly fentanyl and its precursor chemicals entering the United States from China.
Trump said his new tariffs on China were due to Beijing’s failure to stop the transport of chemicals, which was the basis for the devastating drug crisis.
Beijing insists it has weakened illegal production and trade of drugs, saying the issue is something Washington wants to solve.
Daines also met with Deputy Prime Minister He Lifeng on Saturday, close adviser to President Xi Jinping on economic affairs.
He said in a meeting with Daines that China “resolutely opposes the politicization, weaponization and instrumentalization of economic and trade issues.”
The deputy prime minister added that China is willing to “conduct candid dialogue” with the United States, saying they have “many common interests and extensive space for cooperation”.
Trump imposed tariffs that reached 20% of the blankets for overseas freight to the United States.
China’s exports reached record-breaking heights last year, but observers warn that turmoil in the global trading system could soon force Beijing to find other ways to promote activities.
Beijing said the growth rate this year was about 5%, the same as last year, and many economists considered ambitious.
