Dhaka: Bangladesh’s interim leader said on Tuesday that the satellite Internet network Starlink, owned by SpaceX, is expected to be reached within three months to provide internet services in South Asian countries.

Muhammad Yunus, who led the Bangladesh government since Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s ouster last year, said the deal would provide reliable internet services that would not be undermined by any future political unrest.

Nobel Prize winner Yunus was in charge of the interim government in August after being forced to flee to neighboring India after weeks of violent protests.

“If Starlink is launched, no government will be able to shut down internet access or put citizens outside the digital world,” Yunus said in a television speech to the country before Independence Day.

The authorities suspended internet and text messaging services as protests nationwide last July. The Provisional Government said Starstria Linkin’s satellite-based technology would reduce the potential for damage caused by the government.

Yunus said inflation is the government’s biggest challenge. He said inflation fell to 9.32% in February, the lowest level in 22 months, and he hopes it will drop below 8% by June.

He reiterated that national elections will be held between December this year and June 2026.

“Our goal is to ensure that the upcoming elections are the most free, fair and acceptable in Bangladesh’s history,” Yunus said.
