UNICEF said at least 322 children were injured in the Gaza Strip in the past 10 days after the ceasefire between Israel and Hamas and 609 were injured in the Gaza Strip.
“The ceasefire in Gaza provides a lifeline that is urgently needed for children in Gaza and hopes to recover,” said Catherine Russell, executive director of UNICEF.
“But the children are once again trapped in a cycle of deadly violence and deprivation. All parties must comply with obligations under international humanitarian law to protect children,” she said.
UNICEF says most of the children killed are displaced, sheltered tents or damaged houses.
The agency also noted that on March 23, the surgical department of the Al-Nasser Hospital Surgical Hospital in southern Gaza, among the people killed and injured.
UNICEF said the recovery of Israeli bombing and a complete blockade of aid have put Gaza civilians, especially one million of their children, at serious risk since March 2.
“Since March 2, due to the lack of access to the Gaza Strip, the longest lockdown period since the war began, food, safe water, shelter and medical services have become increasingly scarce,” the agency said, warning that preventable child deaths could rise.
UNICEF further calls for an end to hostilities, resume a ceasefire and allow humanitarian and commercial items to enter Gaza.
The agency stressed that “the world must not grasp and allow children to kill and suffer.”
Israeli troops also launched a surprise air campaign in the Gaza Strip on March 18, killing more than 1,000 people since then and undermining the ceasefire and prisoner exchange agreement.
Overall, Israeli military attacks have been killed in Israeli military attacks since October 2023, most of them women and children.
The International Criminal Court issued an arrest warrant last November against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant for his war crimes and crimes against humanity in Gaza.
Israel also faces genocide cases by the International Court of Justice for its war on the enclave.
