Vatican City: The Cardinal will meet on Tuesday to plan the funeral of Pope Francis, with leaders from around the world participating before a meeting next month to elect a new director of the Roman Catholic Church.
Francis, 88, died unexpectedly on Monday after a stroke and cardiac arrest, the Vatican said.
The pope spent five weeks in hospital earlier this year with double pneumonia. But he returned to his home in the Vatican about a month ago and appeared to be recovering and appeared in St. Peter’s Square on Easter Sunday.
His sudden death began the ancient ritual, as the church of 1.4 billion members began the transition from one pope to another, including the “fisherman’s ring” and lead seal that broke into the pope, so it was impossible to use them by anyone else.
“We want to thank the apostolic pilgrims of Lord Francis for the gifts he gave to the whole church,” said Cardinal Mauro Gambetti, who prayed Monday night in St Peter’s Square.
All Cardinals currently in Rome are invited to gather in the Vatican at 9 a.m. (0700gmt) and they are expected to develop a funeral plan.
U.S. President Donald Trump has repeatedly clashed with the pope about immigration, saying he and his wife will fly to Rome to attend the event. Francis’ local Argentina president Javier Milei includes other heads of state.
The Vatican said the ceremony is expected to be held sometime between Friday and Sunday. Francis confirmed in his final will released Monday that he hopes to be buried in the Cathedral of St. Mary in the Roman Cathedral, not St. Peter’s.
The Cardinal’s gathering will also review the daily operations of the church during the time before the election of the new pope.
One conclusion of choosing a new pope is that it will take place 15 to 20 days after the death of the pope, meaning it should not begin before May 6. About 135 Cardinals are eligible to participate in a highly secret ballot that can extend within a few days.
Currently, there is no clear leader to replace Francis.
progress
Pope Francis inherited a chaotic church and worked to overhaul the Vatican central government, rooting in corruption and, after a slow start, faced the scourge of child abuse.
He often clashed with conservatives, nostalgia for the traditional past, who thought Francis was too free and too easy for minorities, such as the LGBTQ community.
Francis appointed nearly 80% of cardinal voters scattered around the world and they would choose the next pope, but there is no guarantee that his successor would continue his progressive policy possibility.
Many cardinals are little known outside their country and will have the opportunity to get to know each other at the meeting where the meeting begins, a few days before the meeting begins, and an overview of the qualities required for the next pope.
The Vatican said late Monday that staff and officials in the church could immediately start tribute to the remains of the pope at the residence of Santa Marta, where Francis set up the grand palace of the apostles where his predecessor lived in 2013.
The Vatican said his body could be moved to St. Peter’s Basilica as early as Wednesday morning for loyal people to visit.
