According to French investigators, a cryotherapy session in Paris would be fatal, with one woman dead and another hospitalized in a critical situation due to a nitrogen leak in the cold room.
A police source said the tragedy happened Monday night at a small sports center in the 11th district of the French capital.
According to the initial findings, a source close to the investigation said that the nitrogen leak in Wenchamber was believed to have caused the poisoning. Her gym employee in her 20s passed away.
The agency’s clients in their 30s are in critical condition.
“The cause of death has been investigated,” the Paris Attorney’s Office said.
Three people who contacted the victim and provided first aid were also treated, police sources said.
When the tragedy occurred, 150 people were present at the gym and were evacuated shortly thereafter.
AFP A reporter who attended the scene on Monday night saw a body covered with a white sheet being carried out in the sports center.
Screens are set to cover up what is happening in front of the gym doors and on the sidewalk.
Nitrogen is a colorless and odorless gas that is commonly used in cryotherapy.
During a walk-in meeting, a person was exposed to temperatures below -100°Celsius, and the recommended time was not more than three minutes.
Advocates say whole body cryotherapy can effectively reduce muscle soreness, stress, rheumatism and a variety of skin conditions.
Celebrity athletes and celebrities use whole-body cryotherapy as an alternative to ice packs and cold water baths.
However, many experts warn that the treatment has not proven medically reasonable and urged further research to determine the short-term and long-term effects.
Diego Brisset, 26, said he planned to work out in the gym but was told it was closed Monday night.
He said he did not practice cryotherapy.
“I’m always told it’s dangerous,” he said.
Cryotherapy in the United States came under scrutiny in 2015 after a woman freezes to death at the Las Vegas spa.
The 24-year-old woman, believed to have entered a cold room in the spa after working hours to relieve some soreness, was found by colleagues the next day
