Washington: U.S. police said Sunday they arrested a man suspected of arson and “terrorism” after the attack on the official residence of Democratic heavyweight and Pennsylvania Gov. Josh Shapiro.

State police said Shapiro is widely regarded as a presidential contender for 2028 when he was with his family when a fire broke out in another part of a Georgian-style mansion in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania.

“Although the fire was successfully put out, it caused damage to a portion of the residence,” the unit said in a statement. No casualties.

Shapiro said he and his sleeping family were “hit at our doorstep” at around 2:00 a.m. local time (0600gmt) and they evacuated from the building.

He said: “Thank God no one was hurt, the fire was put out.”

Shapiro’s reporter outside the residence said the windows turned black as the fire he saw behind him turned black, and he strongly called for an end to political violence.

“This kind of violence has become too common in our society, and if it comes from one particular side or the other, I wouldn’t have to die… It’s not OK, it has to stop.”

Jewish Shapiro held a ceremony with family and friends earlier that night to commemorate the first night of the Passover holiday.

Shapiro pointed out that the motive of the arsonist is not clear, but said he would not be intimidated when observing his beliefs.

Police said they arrested a man suspected of conducting the attack and named him Cody Balmer, 38.

District Attorney Fran Chardo said: “Cody Balmer is in custody.

The term “enumered person” is often used for law enforcement or other public officials.

Authorities said Balmer went over the fence and entered the property and he had “homemade burning equipment” for his people.

Senior state police officers Christopher Paris and George Bivens said he spent several minutes escaping police officers before the outbreak and setting up the fire.

Senior Republican officials responded to the attack on Sunday afternoon, and U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi said she was “very happy with Governor Shapiro and his family.”

Vice President JD Vance called the attack “really disgusting” and said he hoped “whatever it did, it would be brought to justice quickly.”

President Donald Trump returned to Washington when asked about the attack Sunday night and said he had just heard of it.

Shapiro, 51, is running as Democrat Kamala Harris’s running partner in her ultimately failed U.S. presidential bid, and that position is Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.

Shapiro is a confident political centrist who was elected as governor of Pennsylvania in 2022 when he met Trump-backed far-right candidates.
