Majority of Americans fear price hikes under Trump tariffs, Ipsos poll finds

According to a new new, most Americans believe that prices for daily commodities will rise after Donald Trump announces a new tariff proposal. Reuters/ipsos polling.

The president recently announced the biggest U.S. tariff increase in decades, which has attracted the attention of consumers and economists.

The online poll took place for three days and ended on Sunday, finding that 73% of respondents expected prices to rise in the next six months. Only 4% of the expected price will drop, while the rest are foreseeable, with no changes or no answers.

Trump’s tariff plan is a target for imports from almost every country, which includes a levied at least 10%. The move rattled Wall Street and raised criticism from experts who warned that it could raise costs and could trigger a global recession.

Opposition to tariffs is 57%, including a quarter of Republicans. Only 39% said they supported the new measures. Nevertheless, 52% of respondents agreed with the Trump administration’s leverage on the U.S. stance in a global trade deal.

Trump often sees unfair trade practices as justification for raising tariffs, claiming they will revive in U.S. manufacturing. However, 44% of respondents said they disagree with this reason.

Polls also reveal the party gap. Half of those surveyed, including nearly all Republicans, agreed with the statement: “In the long run, any short-term economic pain is worth it.” The other half, including most Democrats, reside.

A national online survey sampled 1,027 adults with an error of approximately 3 percentage points.
