Pope Francis passes away at 88, announces Vatican

Pope Francis, the first Latin American leader of the Roman Catholic Church, died at the age of 88, the Vatican confirmed in a video statement on Monday.

His death marked the end of a 12-year-old pope, often characterized by reformist efforts and significant internal challenges.

Pope Francis has encountered many health problems in recent years, including surgery and ongoing illness, which has affected his ability to fully perform his duties.

The Vatican has not announced details about his funeral or his choice of successor.

Yesterday, Pope Francis called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and condemned the horrific humanitarian conditions caused by Israel’s military movements in the region.

He called for thousands of Easter Sunday Masses in the Vatican City, calling for peace, the release of hostages and global solidarity with the Israelis and Palestinians.

“I express my suffering with all the Israeli people and the Palestinian people….” “I call on warring parties: call for ceasefire, release of hostages, and with the help of hungry people who are eager for a peaceful future.”
