As Israel issued new demands to Hamas, new demands for disarming in its latest proposal, the end of the war on Gaza appears to be at a standstill, and in its latest proposal only temporarily halted attacks on the Palestinian territory, the death toll quickly approached 51,000.
Israel issued the latest proposal to Egypt and Qatar mediators on Monday, offering a temporary ceasefire of 45 days in exchange for Hamas’ release of 11 Israeli prisoners still in Gaza.
Hamas said in a statement that it is reviewing the latest Israeli proposal and will respond as soon as possible.
Sami Abu Zuhri, a senior Hamas official, said that before the official statement was released, Hamas did not accept any request for disarmament, saying: “As long as you have a career, the boycott will continue.”
“Removing Hamas’s request is not even heard. It’s not just a red line, but a million red line,” said Abu Zuhri. “Everyone should understand that it’s a dream – daydreaming. It’s impossible to achieve.”
Hamas insists that Israel is committed to ending the war and taking its troops out of Gaza. In return, it proposed to hand over all remaining prisoners “a batch”.
The latest round of talks in Cairo on Monday ended with no obvious action to end the war permanently, and the war has escalated since Israel’s agreement with Hamas in late January.
Gaza health authorities say Israel has killed more than 1,500 Palestinians since the replay of the war. Gaza’s Ministry of Health said at least 50,983 Palestinians were killed and 116,274 were injured in the Israeli war against Gaza.
Thousands have been displaced again since Israel resumed its campaign and created a blockade on Gaza, forcing the territory into siege and starvation.
